vacation day one

This is kind of a helter skelter vacation, but it’s still a vacation. The one common theme is Maine. Unfortunately, saturday arrived before we were done packing friday. Hopefully we got the right stuff packed, and hopefully we didn’t put too much in the car for getting everyone packed.

The first day of vacation was a kayaking trip south/east of Bath. This was with Fred and two of his friends. Turns out one of them is also friends with some folks we know through the AMC. We saw a couple seals and one porpoise. The porpoise came quite close. We saw some big waves crashing into the rocky shore. We weren’t inclined to surf them because of the probable end of the ride.

This was Tyson’s first long paddle with his new greenland paddle. It took hime a while to get used to it, so I think I ended up doing more of the paddling than I usually do. I’m definitely still sore today.

We stopped for lunch at an island with a lighthouse. There was a group setting up for a wedding so we didn’t stick around for too long.

After lunch and on the way back, Tyson and I tried some more rolls and balance braces in the tandem. We managed a number of things we never had before, so that was cool.

And then right back by the put in, we found some waves that did not end in rocks. So we got one good surf ride before calling it a day.

Then we came back to Fred’s place where we had a lovely evening talking about all sorts of stuff with him and his wife.
