I finally decided to get a new computer. My old computer still did most of what I needed it to, so I had been debating for a while whether or not to get a new one. The problem was that less and less software was supporting it.
Despite being a big Linux fan, a software engineer, and all that, what did I buy? An iMac. (No, not one of those horrid looking fuit colored, rounded edged, CRT blobs from 2000.) The truth of the matter is that most of what I use my desktop for is web browsing and ssh’ing into our home server (that’s Linux). So in that sense it did not matter what I got. On the other hand, what I want to do for fun on the computer is graphic arts. There is a particular piece of closed source software that I use (and will now be upgrading since I can). So, a middle of the road Mac it is.
Does anyone have a suggestion for what to do with my old computer? I can’t think of any use for a working 2003 vintage G5 (PowerPC) Mac Pro? If no one has a good suggestion, I’m going to take advantage of Apple’s computer recycling program.
Depending on exactly which G5 it is, working ones are still worth quite a bit – they had a lot of hardware failures for which new spare parts are no longer available, but some people still require a PowerPC Mac.
