We have been having some interesting times this week with power at work. There have been tons of rumors going around, but as far as I can tell, here is how it happened.

Tuesday around 5pm the fire alarm went off. Everyone evacuated with due speed to preserve our ear drums. We got outside, discovered it was raining and after 5pm and almost everyone decided to go home for the day. It sounds like what happened was that one of the transformers started sparking. Facilities called the fire department and triggered the fire alarm. They did not let people back in to get their stuff for over an hour as they tried to fix things, and they had to cut power to one building until quite late.

Wednesday morning we were greeted with an e-mail saying we could all safely return to our jobs.

Today, aparently, the transformer leaked a lot of oil. So around 10 AM we got notified that no one should go out in the courtyard or hang out near the windows, and there was a fire engine out there again. By 11AM, we were given 30 minutes notice that the one building’s power would be cut again for the rest of the day, and folks with cubes next to the windows should move. I am one row back from the windows, so that was a little exciting. Over the day, they did all sorts of work. The oil in the old transformer was pumped into a chemical truck, they had cranes to move the transformer out, a new one in, more pumping, some work on overhead power lines, and I am not sure what else.

Hopefully tomorrow will not be nearly so exciting.
