A Family Adventure

in the mountains, ocean, and air

I am trying out a new maps plug-in which shows the location of posts. Unfortunately it doesn’t sync up with my existing GPS tracks, so I have to manually set the trip locations on old posts.

[Edit:] The map is now available on the Trip Planning Resources page.

Here is the map of all the posts I have annotated so far:

Travelers' Map is loading...
If you see this after your page is loaded completely, leafletJS files are missing.

There are lots of different settings on the plug in. I can filter to just one activity type. I can change the background map. I can tell it to cluster pins or show every one. I can have it zoom to the existing post. For example, here are the hiking trips with pins clustered:

I spent way too much time making custom icons. It’s easy to find a hiker, bicyclist, and a skier symbol online. It was possible but hard to find a rock climber. Airplane icons exist, but don’t match the style of the people. And finding a Greenland kayaker was impossible.

The one downside of the plug in is it only allows one location and icon per post. I often combine several days of a trip into one post. The plug-in is open source, so next year, when I have time, I might make my own variant which allows multiple locations.

I am still trying to decide how to integrate it with the website. Let me know if you have ideas or suggestions.
