Hike the Pack Monadnocks

Saturday after Thanksgiving we were looking for something to do. I needed to get out of the house and stop worrying about my check ride. I suggested South Pack because we haven’t hiked there in while. I remembered it had some fun ledges (which had been too much for little Isaac last time we tried). It also has a carpet of lady slippers in the spring, but that wasn’t relevant. Then I looked at the guidebook. 2.8 miles. That wouldn’t do at all. We could continue north to the North Pack summit. That would add 5 miles and was unfamiliar trail. We could add another half mile if we took the Cliff Trail instead of the simple out and back. Somewhere here, Tyson started glowering at me.

There wasn’t anything notable about the hike. It was chilly, but we all dressed for the weather. We found the Joanne Bass Bross overlook and enjoyed a sunny lunch. Isaac tried to find ice to go sliding on. There wasn’t as much as he wished. My parents tried to figure out the tangle of different conservation land protecting the ridge. When we got to the Cliff Trail, Tyson decided we should take it. He and Isaac then scrambled up the cliff itself, while I and my parents were more conservative. Back at South Pack, we used our map skills to point out the way down to a trail runner with a minimal pack. By the time we arrived at the car, it was quite dim. But then it does that in late November.
