Kinsman Falls

Monday was undeniably not a soaring day. It poured rain overnight. Then drizzled all morning. The clouds choked every valley, and there was no hint of the mountain peaks. A good day for a hike. Oh, and the temperature was forecast to stay a clammy 45F all day long.

We picked Basin Cascades and Kinsman Falls because rainy days make good waterfall hikes. Plus it was directly on our drive home. By starting at the Franconia campground parking, we made a loop down past Basin Cascades — usually a tourist stop on I-93 — up next to Kinsman Falls, high point at Lonesome lake, and then back down to the parking.

We only saw a few people on the hike. The parking was surprisingly vacant. Maybe the covid hiking rush is starting to die down? Each of the different falls along the Kinsman Falls trail was unique in it’s own way. Here a big wide slide and cascade. There a narrow arching plummet 50 feet in the air. Another a sharp cleft in a canyon with a submerged floor. Best of all, Isaac, who had been increasingly grumpy all weekend about being stuck doing a parents activity, cheered up after a few waterfalls.

We debated hiking the extra tenth of a mile up to the Lonesome Lake Hut to get hot chocolate, but decided it was late enough that we should just go home.
