We assembled the club gliders at the end of March because the weather was starting to look good. Then it proceeded to rain, or snow (4 inches!), or gust to 25kts on every weekend day in April. Tyson opted to get some practice flights in on the week days. He’s up to 4 flights in our glider for the year, and one in a club two seater. I kept waiting for a good weekend, but finally gave up and took a Friday off to get my spring checkout with an instructor, and then this past Monday to do some real flying. Monday 17 pilots showed up to fly. That’s as many as a decent weekend. The thermals were good, though no clouds to mark them. I flew cross country to waypoints above Fitchburg airport, Gardner airport, and Crow Island airport. I found a 5kt thermal over the sand pits south of Gardner where I had hung on for 30 minutes last fall, valiantly trying to not land out.
All the tow planes were operational at the start of the spring, so there hasn’t been much wait for a tow. Tyson has already towed mid week several times. Emilie is trying to coordinate with the weather and the instructor to learn to tow.
Lots of birds out thermalling all month.
