Kayaking Muscongus Bay

July 25, 2025
Emilie Phillips

After we dropped Isaac off at summer camp, Tyson and I spent a few days kayaking near Bristol Maine.

Friday summary

Friday we did a half day paddle from Round Pond south around Louds Island and back. There was a chance of thunderstorms, but they all stayed inland. We had a little bit of current going south, and then mild following seas to help us back north. We had five possible landing spots along the route, but Tyson only ended up needing two of them. I had estimated it would be a 6 mile paddle but it turned out to be 9 miles. Only one of the seafood restaurants at the boat ramp was open by the time were were back and changed.

Saturday Summary

Saturday, high tide was at 1pm, so we paddled inland (north) from Round Pond. Unfortunately, the wind was from the north in the morning and southwest in the afternoon. So the winds and tides were likely to cancel out. In the morning, we were in more open water, so both were mild. An inversion captured the Canadian wildfire smoke down at the water. It also made the funny lensing effect where far off islands are reflected upside down.

We saw a bald eagle, a heron, and and osprey. I spotted a porpoise. And we saw splashes from something else chasing fish, and the fish even leaping out of the water. We never caught it on camera. I didn’t catch the jelly fish on camera either.

There were several islands with larger trail systems. We only stopped to hike Hungry Island.

On the way back, we found 4 knots of ebb current in the Hockomock Channel west of Bremen Long Island. South of Bremen Long Island, it opened up again and the wind was the dominant factor. It was fun chop to play in, but also a lot of effort. We got back in time for a fresh lobster and corn dinner.

Summary of Sunday

We initially were going to do another paddle Sunday, but then we got scheduled to tow gliders at Sterling. So we drove home, admired the rain back at home and canceled gliding, and then cleaned up from the weekend.
