Flying Destinations in New England

Active events and venues

  • Alton Bay ice runway in NH.
  • Bowman Field in Maine. This grass strip in north western Maine hosts a multi-day fly in late summer and a ski fly-in mid-winter.
  • Hampton Airfield in Hampton NH. Great place to learn how to fly or get your tailwheel endorsement. Also has a good airport restaurant.

Former fun destinations

  • Stuart & John’s Hay Field — closed as of January 2020
  • Epping Field – I haven’t heard anyone going there in a while, so I’m guessing the old guy who owned it and flew in his youth has passed.

Cross country ski trips

  • Avalanche Brook from Pinkham Notch down towards Jackson. Emilie thinks this is a cross country ski trip. Other people think you should bring heavier gear.
  • Greeley Ponds

Down Mountain (Telemark, AT, or splitboard)

  • Oakes Gulf steep telemark on Mt Washington.
  • Crescent Ridge down mountain glades maintained by the Granite Backcountry Alliance in Randolph NH
  • Cardigan Mountain is good for beginner to advanced down mountain. It has a few cross country ski trails, but not many.
  • Down the Wildcat Valley trail from the alpine ski area to Jackson. We used to ski this as a nordic ski trip, but recently we have been parking at Prospect Farm. This turns it into a shorter, almost all downhill trip.

Rock Climbing

  • Marlow crag in south western NH. It’s a small crag with ~10 routes. It dries out early in the spring unlike Pawtuckaway.
  • Pawtuckaway State Park has a bunch of bouldering spots and two good top roping areas.
